Olivia’s cancer journey began in April 2025 with what seemed like a simple concern. During a FaceTime call, her sister noticed that one of Olivia’s eyes looked unusual and urged her to go to the hospital. What was expected to be a quick evaluation turned into the discovery of an 8 cm brain tumor, and within hours, Olivia was rushed into emergency brain surgery.

Living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at the time, Olivia’s parents and family immediately flew down to be by her side. At the University of Miami Hospital, an incredible team of surgeons successfully removed approximately 85% of the tumor, saving her life. In an instant, everything changed—but Olivia remains deeply grateful to the medical team that gave her a second chance.

After returning home to Connecticut to be with her family, Olivia began chemotherapy and radiation at Yale Cancer Center’s Smilow Cancer Hospital.

In June 2026, her tumor required another brain surgery. Under the care of Dr. Jennifer Moliterno, Dr. Sylvia Kurz, Dr. Ranjit Bindra, and the outstanding team at Yale, Olivia once again faced surgery, followed by another course of radiation. Today, she continues courageously fighting Grade 4 astrocytoma with remarkable strength, determination, and hope.
Hearing the words, “You have an anaplastic astrocytoma,” is something no 22-year-old ever expects. Yet through every surgery, treatment, and setback, Olivia has met each challenge with incredible courage, unwavering faith, and a smile that inspires everyone around her. Her resilience, positivity, and determination in the face of unimaginable adversity embody the true spirit of courage, making her a truly deserving recipient of the Rice Courage Award
